This month's issue of Outside , says losing ten pounds will add "kick to your game." It says a ten-pound weight loss will save a runner 2:10 in a 10K race and 11 minutes in a marathon. A cyclist saves 0:51 on a 3.1 mile 7-percent hill climb. But what if you are already at or within a few pounds of your target weight? Losing ten pounds for those folks doesn't seem healthy, though the article doesn't address that. It does, however, give five ways to take it off:
- work out before breakfast to boost metabolism
- learn to love dairy (metabolizes fat more efficiently)
- avoid liquid calories (except milk)
- walk 20 minutes after dinner
- eat protein, not sugar or carbs, for a late-night snack (sugar and carbs stimulate production of insulin, changing the way your liver processes glucose, turning it into fat)
I'm not sure I can eat more dairy since it doesn't seem to agree with my stomach, but the article made for Interesting reading.

Man this is good news for me. I've had such a craving for milk this week. I literally drank a gallon of nonfat milk in about 3 days. I just couldn't get enough! Hmm. I wonder if I have to do all the other things *too*. Can just adding a gallon of milk a week result in 10 pounds lost? Let us hope. - Mia

I'm sure Jon in Michigan will be happy to read your post. Didn't he just consume about 3 pounds of MILK chocolate. (That counts, right?)

Heck yeah on the milk chocolate! Although, I should weight about 75 pounds by that theory. :(
Not sure you should be losing 10 pounds either, Susan, based on the pics I've seen. I'm not sure where you'd be hiding 10 pounds anyway unless your bones are alot denser than you think. I think the article is thinking of the average person in the US that has about 20 pounds to lose anyway.

Sounds like good advice to me. I gained 10 pounds through marathon training. Four seem to have dropped off in the week since, but I really want to be back at my pre-marathon weight so maybe I can be a little leaner and faster... Milk does the body good...

I need to lose 10 pounds. and to cut 2:10 of my 10k time would be heavenly! How did you know! What a great idea... I'm going to take milk to work with my lunch now. Maybe it's time to start eating yogurt again...
